The Seattle Aquarium’s offsite Animal Care Center is an 18,090 sf tenant improvement in a portion of a 46,000 sf timber-framed building that was built in 1931 and renovated in 1970. The Animal Care Center houses a number of warm and cold saltwater aquarium habitats, life support equipment, food prep and food storage—all in service of caring for Aquarium residents and supporting the Aquarium’s conservation projects. It also includes staff restrooms, showers, offices, and spaces for veterinary and water quality laboratory work. This facility adds vital back-of-house space to support the Aquarium’s historic expansion, as it prepares to open the Ocean Pavilion in 2024.
